The fluorescent lights hummed a steady tune, a sound that usually grated on Marcus's nerves, but not today. He leaned against the cool metal wall, arms folded, watching Sarah pace. He’d brought a book, a thick tome on the history of obscure maritime battles, a perfect way to spend a few unexpected hours.

“You don’t seem bothered,” Sarah finally said, her voice tight with a mixture of annoyance and… something else. Worry?

Marcus smiled, a slow, unhurried curve of his lips. “What’s to be bothered about? We’re safe, dry, and probably getting paid for this. Besides, haven’t gotten to read in ages. Now I have a good excuse.” He patted the book.

He settled back into the corner, the scent of Sarah’s floral perfume a gentle distraction. Time seemed to stretch and soften, the panic of the situation receding. He opened his book, the rustle of the pages a comforting counterpoint to the quiet whir of the stalled machinery.
